We’re only a few short days away from the official start of winter. It’s time to take extra care in our daily skin routines to prevent the dry, itching skin that often accompanies Old Man Winter. WebMD offers 10 great winter skin care tips to help keep keep face, hands, and feet moist and healthy in the cold weather.

1. Seek out a specialist. A professional will analyze your skin type and give you the best possible advice for your specific needs.

2. Moisture more often. Use products that are oil-based rather than water-based. And choose carefully because not all oil-based moisturizers are right for the face.

3. Be generous with sunscreen. Winter sun can be just as damaging summer sun. Slather on the sunscreen and repeat often throughout the day.

4. Be kind to your hands. The skin on your hands s generally thinner and needs extra special care. Wear gloves to protect your hands from cold weather and moisturize several times a day.

5. Avoid wet gloves and socks. They can irritate your skin and cause itching and cracking.

6. Use a humidifier. Counteract the affects of the central heating circulating warm, dry air at home and at work with a humidifier to add moisture into the air.

7. Hydrate for overall health. Because drinking water to keep your skin looking younger is actually a myth.

8. Don’t forget your feet. They need stronger moisturizers in the winter then in the summer.

9. Avoid harsh facial astringents. Use toners without alcohol and hydrating masks.

10. Skip hot baths. Slipping into a hot, toasty bath feels great when you’re chilled to the bone, but it can be very hard on the skin. Substitute nice, lukewarm baths with oatmeal or baking soda to help relieve dry skin.
